Information Visualization Concepts and Issues

Visualization is the use of interactive visual representation to support a deeper level of understanding of data and foster new insights. It relies on the human’s perceptual and cognitive abilities to visualize. Incorporating visualization technology to the interface is a promising approach for supporting better and informed decision making. This paper provides an overview of the key underlying concepts of information visualization, which focus on abstract data such as in the business domain. The importance of information visualization in a decision support environment is highlighted and different kinds of visualization representations are presented. Current issues that offer opportunities for research are then discussed.
